Aims and Objectives

Our policy on school uniform is based on the notion that school uniform:

• Promotes a sense of pride in the school;
• Engenders a sense of community and belonging towards the school;
• Is practical and smart;
• Identifies the children with the school;
• Prevents children from coming to school in fashion clothes that could be distracting in class;
• Makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance;
• Is regarded as suitable wear for school and good value for money by most parents;
• Is designed with health and safety in mind.

Jewellery & fashion accessories

Children are not allowed to wear jewellery at school. The exceptions to this rule are plain stud earrings with no gemstone for pierced ears located on the ear lobe. No earrings are permitted during PE lessons or at school sports events. Children will be asked to remove their earrings for these lessons. If your child cannot remove their earrings independently, please send them into school without earrings.

Watches, in school colours, navy blue and dark brown, are allowed with discretion – ‘gimmicky’ styles are not allowed in school. Smart Watches and step tracking devices are not allowed at school.

Nail varnish, false nails, make-up, body transfer tattoos and body adornments are strictly forbidden in school. 

 

Mobile phones are not allowed in the school.  If for any reason a parent feels it necessary for their child to have a mobile phone, the Headteacher must be consulted, and the mobile must be handed into the school office at the beginning of the day and collected at home time.  Pass codes must also be provided.

 

Extreme haircuts
Hairstyles should be neat and tidy with hair longer than collar length clipped or tied back throughout the school day.  If necessary, hair accessories, such as clips and slides must be of a simple design and coloured blue, brown or white.    The school does not permit children to have ‘extreme’ haircuts including ‘tramlines’ and patterns cut into hair that could serve as a distraction to other children.  Dyed or tinted hair, the use of gel or similar hair products and braiding with adornments is not allowed. 

Footwear
The school wants all children to grow into healthy adults. We require all children to wear shoes as stated in the uniform list and we strongly recommend shoes with safe non-slip soles for safety.  We do not allow children to wear trainers in school, this is because we consider that this footwear is appropriate for sport or leisure, but is not in keeping with the smart appearance of school uniform. 

School Bags
Rucksacks are available to purchase from the shop on School Money. In view of limited space, other bags are not permitted, with the exception of Year 6 pupils, who may bring in a sensible sized bag of their own choice.

Sun Protection
During hot, sunny weather, children must wear a St Mary’s school peaked cap during break times to protect them from the strong sunshine. These must also be worn on all school outings. Because the school cannot accept responsibility for protecting children against the sun, parents are advised to take adequate precautions.  It is recommended that parents apply a suitable all day sun protection cream/lotion to their children before school.
